Weld preps per ASME IX / AWS D1.6, flange faces, sealing surfaces, tube-sheet drilling, backing-ring seats.
In Scope
ASTM B600 alkaline cleaning + acid pickling, dedicated CP-Ti tooling, contamination-controlled workflow.
Out of Scope
We do not perform ASTM G48 / B117 corrosion testing. Finished-component qualification remains the customer responsibility.

Out of Scope
We machine weld preps. Welding and WPS / WPQ qualification remain the customer or designated fabricator responsibility.
Engineering Compliance
For chemical processing, marine, and biomedical components, the material specification is the first control point and the foundation for finished-service life. The manufacturing process must preserve drawing requirements, CP-Ti material identity, dimensional conformity, and lot-level documentation.
| Standard / Specification | Material or Quality Scope | Application in Procurement |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM B348 | Titanium and titanium alloy bars and billets (Grade 2 form) | Verify grade, condition, dimensions, and material certification for bar / billet stock. |
| ASTM B265 | Titanium and titanium alloy strip, sheet, and plate (Grade 2 form) | Verify grade, condition, dimensions, and material certification for plate / sheet stock. |
| ASTM B338 | Seamless and welded titanium and titanium alloy tubes for condensers and heat exchangers (Grade 2 form) | Confirm specification applicability for tube and heat-exchanger applications. |
| ASTM F67 | Unalloyed titanium for surgical implant applications (Grade 2 form) | Reference for non-load-bearing implant components (surgical mesh, plates, dental). |
| ASME SB-348 | Titanium and titanium alloy bars and billets (pressure-vessel code) | Confirm specification applicability when the program requires ASME BPVC Section II material. |
| ASTM B600 | Standard guide for descaling and cleaning titanium and titanium alloy surfaces | Reference for the agreed surface-preparation / pickling step on finished components. |
| AS9100D | Aerospace quality management system | Applicable when the manufacturing facility holds the relevant certification and the program has aerospace overlap. |
| ISO 9001 | Quality management system | Applicable when the manufacturing facility holds the relevant certification. |
Material Documentation: MTR supplied with each shipment covered by the agreed traceability requirements.
Material certificates, oxygen / iron limits verification, heat / lot identification, and purchase specification requirements are reviewed against the order documentation. Customer-supplied material is accepted by prior agreement subject to incoming inspection and identification.
Technical Capabilities
Engineering Challenge
Commercially pure titanium chips tend to be long, stringy, and "gummy" — they do not break cleanly. The behavior is driven by the alloy low thermal conductivity combined with the absence of hard second-phase particles. Long stringy chips can wrap the tool, scratch the workpiece, and clog flutes, especially in deep cavities, through-holes, and small-diameter features.
Our Machining Approach
We use sharp, positive-rake carbide tooling with chip-breaker geometry suited to CP-Ti, lower cutting speeds than for Ti-6Al-4V (often 30–50% lower), high-pressure coolant directed at the cutting edge, and rigid setup with adequate chip clearance. Toolpath strategies (trochoidal milling, climb cutting where compatible, controlled engagement) are used to reduce chip-pack risk. Tool condition is monitored to maintain edge sharpness.
Engineering Outcome
Predictable chip evacuation, reduced risk of re-cut and surface damage, and improved process repeatability. Final achievable tolerances depend on part geometry, setup rigidity, material condition, and inspection method; for validated geometries, the process can target linear dimensional tolerance up to ±0.025 mm — generally looser than alloyed grades, but with significantly less tool wear.
Engineering Challenge
Grade 2 corrosion resistance in chloride-bearing media (seawater, brines, bleach, nitric acid) depends on an intact, oxide-passive surface. Iron, carbon-steel, abrasive, or free-machining-steel embedment from prior work can seed pitting, galvanic cells, and crevice corrosion, even when bulk chemistry is correct. Cleaning, pickling, and passivation steps can repair the surface, but the safest approach is to prevent contamination in the first place.
Our Machining Approach
Where the order scope requires it, we segregate CP-Ti work from carbon-steel / 316L / aluminum work, use dedicated tooling, workholding, and consumables, and verify cleanliness at incoming and pre-finishing inspection. Surface preparation per ASTM B600 (alkaline cleaning + acid pickling) is scheduled per the agreed inspection plan. Passivation schedules are matched to the customer downstream service environment.
Engineering Outcome
Surface free of iron and abrasive embedment, with the passive oxide film intact at the point of shipment. Corrosion performance remains subject to the customer qualification of the finished component in its service environment; we do not perform in-house corrosion testing beyond the agreed surface-preparation acceptance criteria.
Engineering Challenge
Grade 2 is overwhelmingly used in welded assemblies — tanks, heat exchangers, piping, fluid handling. The machined features are typically weld preps (groove angles, root faces, backing-ring seats) plus flange faces, sealing surfaces, and ports. Thin-wall vessels, headers, and formed sheet present low rigidity and large springback under cutting force, especially when the parent material has been cold-worked. Thermal distortion from adjacent welding further tightens the post-machining tolerance window.
Our Machining Approach
We machine weld preps to the agreed geometry (typically per ASME IX / AWS D1.6 / ISO 9692 as applicable), with root-face flatness, groove angle tolerance, and surface-finish targets confirmed against the welding procedure specification. For thin-wall vessels and formed sheet, we use low-engagement roughing, balanced machining sequences, and dedicated workholding sized to the part envelope. Final machining is scheduled as late as practical in the assembly sequence to leave weld distortion allowance for the final cut.
Engineering Outcome
Weld prep geometry that meets the agreed WPS tolerance band, thin-wall features held within drawing limits after welding, and final machined reference surfaces available for fit-up. Tolerance and surface-finish commitments are confirmed after CAD, drawing, material condition, weld sequence, and inspection-method review.
Flexible Supply Chain
Chemical, marine, and biomedical projects often need rapid design validation before locking the production drawing. Our commercial model supports 1-piece prototype evaluation, weld-prep qualification, and subsequent production planning without requiring a large initial order.
| Commercial Parameter | Prototype / Engineering Validation | Production |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum order quantity | 1 piece | Based on the production order |
| Indicative lead time | 5–7 working days | 3–4 weeks |
| Typical objective | Validate fit, weld prep, surface finish, corrosion prep | Repeatable output against the approved drawing and inspection plan |
| Surface preparation | ASTM B600 cleaning / pickling per the agreed route | Scheduled per the approved process route |
| Material documentation | As agreed in the purchase specification | MTR and traceability documentation per the order |
Lead times are planning targets, not automatic guarantees. They begin after the required technical information, material availability, order approval, and production arrangements are confirmed. Welded-assembly machining, external surface preparation, and customer-supplied material may affect the schedule.
