Honest Positioning

Where We Don't Compete

BOZE Metal is a sourcing and processing partner for titanium mill products, not a primary melter. The following scope clarifications are necessary for accurate technical and commercial alignment.

No primary melting

Ingot / VAR / EBM melting is not in our vertically integrated scope. We source bar and rod from upstream mills that hold the metallurgical chain-of-custody; our scope is sourcing, processing, and quality verification.

No blanket "aerospace-grade"

Material specifications are applied "where applicable" per order. AS9100D governs our QMS, not every shipment's classification. Confirm criticality class, specification (AMS 4928, ASTM B348, ASTM F136), and required documentation per RFQ.

No "certified implant" blanket claim

We supply bar and rod to medical material specifications (ASTM F136 / ISO 5832-3) where applicable. We are a material supplier and processor, not a finished medical device manufacturer; downstream device-level certification remains the device maker's responsibility.

No 24-hour quote promise

Engineering review and quotation timelines are confirmed at the RFQ stage based on the order complexity, alloy, and downstream processing required. Standard stock items typically receive a same-week response.

UT inspection is order-specified

Ultrasonic examination per ASTM E213 / AMS-STD-2154 is available and applied where the order specification requires it. UT class (A1 / A2 / A3) and acceptance criteria are stated at the RFQ — not assumed by default on every shipment.

EN 10204 3.1 vs 3.2

Default mill certification is EN 10204 3.1 (manufacturer-issued, mill-quality-department inspection). EN 10204 3.2 (independent third-party witnessing) is available on request for pressure-vessel, nuclear, and critical-service applications.

Production Workflow

Bar and Rod Production Workflow

From incoming VAR-refined ingot through forging, hot rolling, cold drawing / centerless grinding, annealing, NDT and MTR issuance — six controlled stages with documentation checkpoints at each handoff.

  1. 01

    VAR Ingot Sourcing & Verification

VAR-refined titanium ingot sourced to ASTM B348 / AMS 4928 chemistry. Incoming spectrometer verification confirms alloy chemistry and interstitial control before stock release.

  2. 02

    Hot Forging & Breakdown

Multi-direction forging on high-tonnage press breaks up cast dendritic structure, refines grain flow, and establishes mechanical-property baseline for downstream reduction.

  3. 03

    Hot Rolling & Conditioning

Controlled heating window per grade; hot rolling reduction to intermediate bar diameter. Surface conditioning removes oxide scale and surface defects before further reduction.

  4. 04

    Cold Drawing / Centerless Grinding

Cold-drawing dies and high-rigidity centerless grinders hold h7–h9 diameter tolerance per ISO 286-1. Surface finish and straightness verified against ASTM B348 §9 / §10.

  5. 05

    Vacuum Annealing & Stress Relief

Stress relief or solution anneal per grade; vacuum or inert-atmosphere furnace prevents surface contamination and controls alpha-case formation.

  6. 06

    UT, MTR & Lot Marking

UT per ASTM E213 / AMS-STD-2154 (where specified); EN 10204 3.1 MTR issued with chemistry, tensile, and impact data; laser-marked lot identity preserved to piece.

Operating Boundaries

Operating Boundaries & Failure Modes

Three service-environment boundaries that drive alloy selection and process planning. Confirm these constraints at the RFQ stage.

Creep Ceiling above 400 °C

CP titanium and common α-β alloys (Gr5, Gr23) are intended for service below ~315 °C for sustained loading; Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo (Ti-6-2-4-2) extends this envelope to ~500 °C. Confirm elevated-temperature selection at RFQ for sustained operation above 400 °C.

Reducing-Acid & Fluoride Attack

Strong reducing inorganic acids (HCl, concentrated H₂SO₄) and anhydrous fluoride media attack unalloyed CP titanium. Specify Grade 7 (Ti-Pd) or Grade 12 (Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni) for these environments to suppress hydrogen uptake and embrittlement.

Deep-Hole Drilling & Work Hardening

Titanium work-hardens rapidly. Deep-hole drilling beyond L:D 10:1 without high-pressure internal coolant, peck cycles, and dedicated drill geometry risks flute packing, drill breakage, and excessive heat input to the workpiece.

Engineering & Procurement FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Six common buyer questions on interstitial control, heat-treat state, batch consistency, UT inspection level, ISO 286 tolerance, and EN 10204 3.1 vs 3.2 mill certification.

Q1 How is interstitial oxygen controlled in medical-grade (Grade 23 / Ti-6Al-4V ELI) titanium bar?
Medical-grade bar is sourced to ASTM F136 and ISO 5832-3, both of which cap oxygen at ≤ 0.13 wt% (vs ≤ 0.20 wt% for Grade 5 per ASTM B348). Lower interstitial content improves fracture toughness, ductility, and fatigue life in fracture-critical implant applications. MTR verification of O, N, H, and Fe content is provided on every heat-lot.
Q2 Should aerospace fastener stock be ordered in the annealed condition or in cold-drawn temper?
For cold-heading and thread-rolling of fasteners, specify annealed (M temper) bar with subsequent stress relief after forming. For as-machined aerospace pins, shafts, and fittings, cold-drawn bar (B+A condition) provides higher tensile/yield strength with controlled ductility. Both conditions are available; confirm forming sequence with the RFQ to align heat-treat state.
Q3 How is batch-to-batch mechanical-property consistency guaranteed for repeat orders?
Every bar is sourced from a single heat number (or controlled VAR lot) and issued with an EN 10204 3.1 MTR documenting the full chemistry, tensile, and reduction-of-area results. Repeat orders reference the original heat number where possible; when unavailable, the new heat-lot MTR is reviewed against the prior acceptance criteria before release.
Q4 What UT inspection level applies to aerospace bar stock?
Aerospace bar is typically inspected to AMS-STD-2154 Class A (longitudinal) or Class AA on request, with reference to ASTM E213 technique. Class selection depends on the part criticality: Class A1 for general structural, A2 / A3 for fracture-critical rotating or load-bearing hardware. UT acceptance criteria and recording level are specified per order; ultrasonic examination is available where specified.
Q5 What is the difference between h7, h8, and h9 tolerance and when is each specified for bar stock?
h7, h8, h9 are ISO 286-1 tolerance grades for shaft dimensions. h7 is the tightest (e.g. ±0.015 mm at Ø10 mm), h9 the loosest (e.g. ±0.036 mm at Ø10 mm). Specify h7 for high-precision Swiss turning, bearing seats, and medical implants; h8 for general CNC turning and fastener blank feed; h9 for as-rolled or peeled bar fed to secondary machining.
Q6 What is the difference between EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2 mill certification and when is 3.2 required?
EN 10204 3.1 is a mill test certificate issued by the manufacturer with independent inspection by the mill's quality department. EN 10204 3.2 adds independent witnessing by a third-party inspector (e.g. Lloyd's, TÜV, or customer-appointed agent) and is typically required for pressure-vessel, nuclear, and critical-service applications. Specify 3.2 at the RFQ stage when witnessed testing is required.
