Honest Positioning

Where We Do Not Compete

BOZE Metal is a sourcing and processing partner for titanium tube and pipe, not a primary melter. The following scope clarifications are necessary for accurate technical and commercial alignment on titanium heat-exchanger and process-pipe projects.

No primary melting

Ingot, VAR, and EBM melting is not in our vertically integrated scope. We source tube-billet and welded-tube strip from upstream mills that hold the metallurgical chain-of-custody; our scope is sourcing, processing, and quality verification.

No blanket aerospace-grade

Material specifications are applied "where applicable" per order. AS9100D governs our QMS, not every shipment classification. Confirm criticality class, specification (ASTM B338, B861, B862, AMS), and required documentation per RFQ.

No blanket medical claim

We supply tube to medical material specifications (ASTM F67, F136) where applicable. We are a material supplier and processor, not a finished medical device manufacturer; downstream device-level certification remains the device maker responsibility.

No 24-hour quote promise

Engineering review and quotation timelines are confirmed at the RFQ stage based on the order complexity, alloy, OD x WT, and downstream processing required. Standard stocked items typically receive a same-week response.

UT inspection is order-specified

100 percent eddy-current testing (ET) per ASTM E426 is standard. Ultrasonic examination per ASTM E213 and ASME Sec. V is available and applied where the order specification requires it; UT class and acceptance criteria are stated at the RFQ, not assumed by default.

Production Workflow

Tube and Pipe Production Workflow

From incoming VAR-refined ingot through tube-billet preparation, cold-rolling or welding, bright anneal, 100 percent NDT, and EN 10204 3.1 MTR issuance - six controlled stages with documentation checkpoints at each handoff.

  1. 01

    Incoming sponge and ingot verification

Grade-certified sponge titanium is VAR or EBM melted to ingot, with upstream mill heat-lot, chemistry, and macro-etch test records verified against the procurement specification before tube-stock production begins.

  2. 02

    Tube-billet preparation

For seamless product, cylindrical billets are hot-extruded or cross-roll pierced to form the mother tube. For welded product, strip or sheet coil is slit to width and edge-conditioned prior to forming.

  3. 03

Cold-rolling or drawing (seamless), roll-forming and welding (welded)

Seamless tube is reduced to final OD x WT on multi-stand cold pilger mills or draw benches with intermediate anneals. Welded tube is roll-formed then welded by HFW or TIG with full-penetration autogenous or wire-additive process; weld bead is conditioned online.

  4. 04

    Continuous bright anneal and straightening

Final recrystallization anneal under protective atmosphere (O2 below 50 ppm) restores ductility. Tube is then straightened, cut to length, and ends deburred to the dimensional callout.

  5. 05

100 percent NDT and pressure test

Every tube is eddy-current tested (ET) for longitudinal and transverse defects per ASTM E426. Hydrostatic test at the spec pressure; pneumatic test where the order requires. UT per ASTM E213 is added where the spec calls for Class A or B.

  6. 06

    Documentation, MTR, packaging

EN 10204 3.1 mill test report (chemistry and mechanical) is issued per heat and lot, with dimensional, NDT, and pressure-test records attached. Tube is end-capped, bundled, and packed in seaworthy wooden cases or plywood crates.

Operating Boundaries

Operating Boundaries and Failure Modes

Three service-environment boundaries that drive alloy selection and process planning. Confirm these constraints at the RFQ stage.

High-temperature service ceiling

Unalloyed CP titanium (Gr.1 or Gr.2) is sensitive to intergranular oxidation above 300 C in strongly oxidizing or specific fluoride-bearing media. For high-temperature or high-pressure structural service, specify Gr.5 (Ti-6Al-4V) or Gr.7 (Ti-Pd) where the medium is a hot reducing acid.

Galvanic (bimetallic) isolation required

In seawater and chloride-bearing service, titanium tubes must be electrically isolated from carbon-steel tube-sheets and flanges. Use insulating gaskets, PTFE or EPDM washers, and titanium-clad tube-sheets; avoid direct carbon-steel contact to prevent galvanic-couple corrosion of the ferrous member.

Bend-radius and cold-forming limits

Cold bending must keep bend radius R >= 3 x OD to avoid wall thinning and wrinkling. For tighter geometry or thin-wall condenser U-bends, use mandrel-controlled induction bending with post-form stress-relief anneal; ovality is held within 2 percent of nominal OD on request.

Standard stocked OD x WT combinations have no minimum order quantity for engineering sampling. Non-stock dimensions, custom alloys, and U-bend coil fabrication are scheduled against upstream-mill batches; MOQ is determined by the mill campaign and confirmed at RFQ.

Lead-time windows

Standard stocked tube items ship in 5-7 days. Custom OD x WT combinations, special-alloy pulls, and U-bend coil fabrication run 6-8 weeks, driven by upstream-mill rolling campaign and post-form NDT cycle. Engineering review and final quotation timing is confirmed at the RFQ stage.

Dimensional Comparison

CP Titanium Tube vs. Cu-Ni and 316L

Four procurement-relevant dimensions comparing industrial CP-titanium tube (Gr.2) against the conventional Cu-Ni (B10 or B30) and austenitic stainless (316L) alternatives in seawater and process-fluid service.

Dimension CP Titanium (Gr.2) Cu-Ni Alloy (B10 or B30) Austenitic SS (316L)
Seawater service life Over 30 years (effectively maintenance-free in clean seawater) 10-15 years (Cu-Ni susceptible to sulphide and ammonia attack) 5-8 years (316L prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride media)
Density and mass penalty 4.51 g/cm3 (about 45 percent lighter than Cu-Ni) 8.9 g/cm3 (heavy, increases support-structure load) 7.93 g/cm3 (intermediate)
Heat-transfer stability High (oxide film resists fouling, no spalling) Moderate (verdigris or patina can build and shed) Lower (biofouling and scale attachment frequent)
Life-cycle cost (LCC) Higher initial investment, lowest total LCC over service life Moderate initial, mid-life LCC due to inspection and repair Lowest initial, highest maintenance and replacement frequency

Engineering and Procurement FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Six common buyer questions on welding practice, ASTM B338 conformance, U-bend forming, large-project chemistry consistency, price-hedging strategies, and galvanic isolation.

Q1 How do you prevent hydrogen embrittlement and HAZ grain coarsening when welding titanium heat-exchanger tubes?
Use high-purity argon (>= 99.999 percent) for both purge (backing) and trailing-shield protection on the ID and OD. Hold inter-pass temperature below 150 C to limit oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen pickup. For thin-wall condenser tubes, orbital TIG with a water-cooled copper backing bar is the standard joint configuration. Post-weld vacuum stress relief is applied where the order spec calls for it.
Q2 How do you verify that delivered titanium tube meets ASTM B338 or ASME SB338 chemistry and mechanical requirements?
Each lot is shipped with a heat-lot spectrographic chemistry report, room-temperature tensile results, and a record of 100 percent eddy-current and hydrostatic tests. Where the order requires, mechanical tests are extended with flattening, flare, and reverse-bend tests. Third-party inspection by Lloyds Register, Bureau Veritas, DNV, or customer-appointed agencies is welcomed; our mill is set up for witnessed test programs at the RFQ stage.
Q3 How do you control wrinkling and springback when bending thin-wall titanium tubes for U-bend heat-exchangers?
Mandrel-assisted CNC bending with controlled strain distribution, combined with intermediate stress-relief anneals, keeps ovality within 2 percent of nominal OD on standard U-bend packages. Springback is compensated by a closed-loop bend-angle algorithm that updates with each tube actual modulus. For very thin walls or tight radius, induction hot-bending at 600-750 C is used to suppress wall thinning.
Q4 How is chemical and mechanical consistency maintained across kilometer-length tube lots in large projects?
Heat-lot integrity is preserved from VAR-refined ingot through extrusion, cold reduction, and final anneal. 100 percent of production is eddy-current tested; UT class A or B is added per the order spec. Each shipment carries a 3.1 MTR with chemistry, tensile, and NDT results traceable to the originating heat. Multi-lot projects are co-mingled only after chemistry cross-check at incoming inspection.
Q5 How can procurement teams manage titanium price volatility and origin-of-material compliance risk?
Annual framework agreements with cost-pass-through indexed to a recognized sponge-titanium reference allow buyers to lock conversion margin while remaining exposed (or hedged) on raw-material movement. Each shipment is delivered with a Certificate of Origin and customs declaration suitable for international EPC and OEM projects. Independent chain-of-custody is available through the supplier ISO 9001 and AS9100D records, opened for audit at the RFQ stage.
Q6 What is the right way to attach titanium tubes to a carbon-steel tubesheet without causing galvanic corrosion?
Use a titanium-clad or titanium-lined tubesheet, or fit a transition joint that brings the wetted surface to titanium. At the tube-to-tubesheet joint, explosive welding plus a full-penetration seal weld is the conventional method. Insulating gaskets and non-conductive fasteners are added where any ferrous member remains in the assembly, to break the galvanic couple.
