Honest Positioning

Where We Do Not Compete

BOZE Metal is a sourcing and processing partner for titanium foil and coil, not a primary melter. The following scope clarifications are necessary for accurate technical and commercial alignment on thin-gauge foil orders.

No primary melting

Sponge, VAR and EBM melting and sheet-bar production is not in our vertically integrated scope. We source sheet-bar from upstream mills; our scope is cold-rolling, annealing, slitting, surface conditioning, and quality verification.

No blanket aerospace-grade

Material specifications are applied "where applicable" per order. AS9100D governs our QMS, not every shipment classification. Confirm criticality class, specification (ASTM B265, AMS 4900), and required documentation per RFQ.

No blanket medical claim

We supply foil to medical material specifications (ASTM F67, F136) where applicable. We are a material supplier and processor, not a finished medical device manufacturer; downstream device-level certification remains the device maker responsibility.

No 24-hour quote promise

Engineering review and quotation timelines are confirmed at the RFQ stage based on the order complexity, alloy, thickness, and downstream processing required. Standard stocked items typically receive a same-week response.

NDT and surface metrology

Visual inspection at production speed and eddy-current continuity on Class A foil are standard. Laser-thickness gauge records and roughness metrology are available on request. NDT and metrology scope are stated at the RFQ, not assumed by default.

Production Workflow

Foil and Coil Production Workflow

From incoming sheet-bar verification through cold rolling, bright anneal, slitting, NDT, and EN 10204 3.1 MTR issuance - six controlled stages with documentation checkpoints at each handoff.

  1. 01

    Incoming sheet-bar stock verification

Grade-certified titanium sheet-bar is received with upstream-mill heat-lot, chemistry, and macro-etch records. Lot is verified against ASTM B265 or AMS 4900 before the rolling line starts.

  2. 02

    Cold rolling and intermediate anneal

Sheet-bar is reduced to foil-gauge thickness through a multi-stand cold rolling mill with intermediate vacuum anneals to restore ductility between passes. Hard-rolled temper is achieved by skipping the final anneal.

  3. 03

    Bright anneal and surface conditioning

Final anneal under protective atmosphere produces a clean, oxide-thin surface suitable for downstream forming. Descaling, brushing, and polishing are added where the order requires a specific surface finish.

  4. 04

    Slitting, cut-to-length, leveling

Foil is slit to customer-specified width (50-610 mm) and either level-wound into coils, traverse-wound onto spools, or cut to sheet length. Tension and edge-burr control are critical for downstream stamping and forming.

  5. 05

    NDT and visual inspection

100 percent visual inspection at production speed; eddy-current continuity check on Class A foil; mechanical-test sample per heat for UTS, elongation, and grain size per ASTM E8 and E112.

  6. 06

    Packaging and MTR

Foil is interleaved with neutral paper or laser-cut PET film, vacuum-sealed in foil pouches for medical and AM grades, and shipped with an EN 10204 3.1 MTR with chemistry, mechanical data, and dimensional report traceable to the originating heat.

Operating Boundaries

Operating Boundaries and Failure Modes

Three service-environment boundaries that drive alloy selection, surface finish, and tolerance class. Confirm these constraints at the RFQ stage.

Rolling direction and grain structure

Foil rolling produces anisotropic mechanical properties: tensile strength is highest along the rolling direction and lower transverse. Confirm whether the downstream forming operation requires equal-biaxial or uniaxial forming, and select the temper and grain-size class accordingly.

Surface contamination in chemical and biomedical use

Bright annealed and descaled surfaces are required for chemical and biomedical service. Surface oxide residue from anneal will compromise corrosion performance in reducing-acid media; specify a descaled or pickled surface for these applications.

Thickness tolerance in thin foil

For foil below 0.1 mm, standard mill tolerance is plus or minus 10 percent of nominal. Tight-tolerance foil (plus or minus 0.005 mm or better) is available with a tooling surcharge; confirm tolerance class at the RFQ stage.

Stock and MOQ flexibility

Standard stocked grade and thickness combinations have no minimum order quantity for engineering sampling. Non-stock thickness, custom width, and small-lot medical or energy foils are scheduled against upstream-mill batches; MOQ is determined by the mill campaign and confirmed at the RFQ stage.

Lead-time windows

Standard stocked foil and coil items ship in 5-7 days. Non-standard alloy, custom width, and tight-tolerance foil run 4-6 weeks, driven by upstream-mill rolling campaign. Engineering review and final quotation timing is confirmed at the RFQ stage.

Dimensional Comparison

Titanium Foil vs. Stainless Steel, Nickel and Copper

Four procurement-relevant dimensions comparing titanium foil (Gr.2 annealed reference) against the conventional austenitic stainless, nickel, and copper foil alternatives in chemical, electrolyzer, and stamping service.

Dimension Titanium Foil (Gr.2) Austenitic SS (302 / 316L) Nickel / Copper Foil
Specific strength (UTS / density) Up to 200 kNm/kg (Gr.2 annealed) Up to 170 kNm/kg (annealed 302 SS) Up to 150 kNm/kg (commercially pure nickel)
Density and mass 4.51 g/cm3 (about 44 percent lighter than steel) 7.93 g/cm3 (reference austenitic SS) 8.9 g/cm3 (commercially pure copper)
Corrosion in chloride media Effectively immune to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and brine Susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride media Susceptible to ammonia and sulfide attack
Formability at thin gauge Good at 0.025-0.1 mm annealed; deep-draw and stamping on Gr.1 / Gr.2 Work-hardens rapidly; spring-back concerns Softer but limited corrosion in chloride media

Engineering and Procurement FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Six common buyer questions on grade selection for chemical and energy service, thickness tolerance, surface finish for electrolyzer, grain structure, sheet-cut formats, and shipment documentation.

Q1How do you select the right titanium foil grade for chemical and energy service?
Match the alloy to the medium. CP Gr1 and Gr2 are the workhorse for general chemical and battery-foil service. Gr7 (Ti-Pd) is required for reducing acids (HCl, dilute H2SO4) and is the default for chlor-alkali membrane and HCl electrolyzer applications. Gr12 is selected for hot brine and seawater thin-gauge service.
Q2How is foil thickness tolerance controlled below 0.1 mm?
For foil below 0.1 mm, the rolling mill uses a laser-thickness gauge with closed-loop feedback to maintain thickness within plus or minus 0.005 mm of target. Standard mill tolerance is plus or minus 10 percent of nominal; tight-tolerance foil is available with a tooling surcharge and is typically scheduled against a dedicated rolling campaign.
Q3What surface finish is required for bipolar-plate and electrolyzer service?
Bright annealed and descaled surface is the standard. For PEM and chlor-alkali electrolyzers, the foil is often surface-conditioned to a controlled roughness (Ra 0.2-0.8 micrometer) to optimize coating adhesion. Gr7 (Ti-Pd) is the default alloy for chlor-alkeli cells; confirm coating requirement and post-coat surface state at the RFQ stage.
Q4How is grain structure controlled in annealed foil?
Grain size is set by the final anneal temperature and dwell time, with a target ASTM grain size number of 7-9 for annealed CP foil (about 20-40 micrometer). Cross-grain uniformity is monitored by sampling per coil; mechanical-test results and grain-size data are reported on the 3.1 MTR.
Q5Can titanium foil be supplied cut-to-length as sheet?
Yes. Foil can be supplied level-wound in coil, traverse-wound on spool, or cut-to-length as sheet with customer-specified length and width. Laser-cut blank shapes are also available where the order requires a specific blank geometry; tolerance and edge-quality are confirmed at the RFQ stage.
Q6What documentation is supplied with each foil shipment?
EN 10204 3.1 mill test report (chemistry, tensile, elongation, grain size), surface-finish declaration, and dimensional report per coil or per sheet bundle. Independent third-party witness tests by Lloyds, Bureau Veritas, DNV, or customer-appointed agencies are welcomed and arranged at the RFQ stage.
