What is a Chip Management & Fire Suppression System?
A chip management and fire suppression system is an integrated equipment package for safe handling of titanium machining waste. Titanium chips and swarf are pyrophoric — when fine, dry, or in powder form, they can self-ignite and burn at extremely high temperatures that cannot be extinguished with water or CO₂. A proper system includes: (1) chip conveyors for continuous removal from the machine tool, (2) coolant filtration (centrifuge + bag filter cascade) for chip/coolant separation, (3) submerged/wet chip collection to prevent chip drying, and (4) automatic Class D fire suppression with IR flame detection. Compliance with NFPA 484 (Standard for Combustible Metals) is mandatory.
Classification
Coolant & Chip Management
Common Names
Key Characteristics
- Hinge-belt conveyor + drum filtration for continuous chip removal from machine
- 10-20 µm centrifuge + bag filter cascade for clean coolant recirculation
- Submerged/wet chip collection — mandatory for titanium to prevent chip drying and fire
- Automatic Class D fire suppression system with IR flame/thermal detection
- NFPA 484 compliant design for combustible metal processing
- Digital coolant monitoring — concentration, pH, temperature, and flow tracking
- Electrostatic or HEPA mist collector for airborne oil mist and particulate control
- 40-60% longer coolant life and 15-30% extended tool life through effective filtration
