Engineering Compliance

Hot-Brine / Chloride Material Compliance Starts with the Correct Specification

For chemical processing, oil-and-gas, and power-generation applications in hot brine, chloride, or mildly reducing environments, the material specification — and in particular the Mo and Ni content — is the first control point.

Technical Capabilities

Three Critical Controls for Grade 12 Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni Machining

01

Mo / Ni Content Verification and Mill Traceability

Engineering Challenge

The hot-brine and crevice-corrosion advantage of Grade 12 depends on the small Mo + Ni additions. A bar that drifts below specification behaves like Grade 2 in hot chloride. The MTR must show both elements within the ASTM B348 limits.

Our Machining Approach

We confirm the MTR chemistry against the customer specification at incoming inspection. Customer-supplied material is accepted only with a complete MTR showing the Mo and Ni values.

Engineering Outcome

Verified Mo + Ni content at the agreed acceptance range, with full chemistry traceability.

02

Hot-Brine / Crevice-Corrosion Performance Preservation

Engineering Challenge

Grade 12 is specified specifically for its hot-brine and crevice-corrosion resistance. Surface contamination, embedded iron, or a damaged passive film can undermine the crevice advantage and lead to premature failure in stagnant brine conditions.

Our Machining Approach

We segregate Grade 12 work from carbon-steel / 316L where the order scope requires it, use dedicated tooling, and schedule ASTM B600 surface preparation per the agreed inspection plan.

Engineering Outcome

Surface free of iron and abrasive embedment, with the passive film intact at the point of shipment.

03

Weldability and Weld-Prep Geometry

Engineering Challenge

Grade 12 weldments retain CP-Ti-like weldability, but the Mo / Ni additions can shift the optimum weld parameter window. Improper shielding-gas coverage or contamination at the joint can degrade weld-metal corrosion resistance in the same way it does for Grade 2.

Our Machining Approach

We machine weld preps to ASME IX / AWS D1.6 geometry, schedule surface preparation before welding, and confirm the WPS / WPQ reference at the RFQ stage. Cutting parameters and weld-prep tolerance are matched to the Grade 2 / Grade 7 baseline.

Engineering Outcome

Weld prep geometry and joint surface condition that meet the agreed WPS tolerance band, with welding and WPS / WPQ qualification remaining the customer responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grade 12 Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni CNC Machining — Engineering FAQ

Q1 What is Grade 12 titanium and when is it used over Grade 2?
Grade 12 is an "improved" CP-Ti alloy (UNS R53400) with small molybdenum (~0.3%) and nickel (~0.8%) additions. It retains CP-Ti weldability and cold-formability while offering roughly 50% higher strength than Grade 2 and significantly better crevice / hot-brine corrosion resistance. The trade-off vs Grade 5 is lower strength but better weldability, lower cost, and better performance in hot chloride brines.
Q2 Is Grade 12 weldable and formable like Grade 2?
Yes. The Mo and Ni additions are small enough that mechanical and fabrication behavior is essentially the same as Grade 2 — cold-forming, hot-forming, machining, and welding all use the same procedures. The alloy is often specified specifically because it welds well and resists hot-brine crevice attack.
Q3 Where is Grade 12 used instead of Grade 2 / 7?
Grade 12 is the workhorse for chemical processing, oil-and-gas, and power-generation applications where hot brine, chloride, or mildly reducing environments would attack Grade 2 but Grade 7 chemistry is unnecessary. Common uses: condenser and heat-exchanger tube, vessel and column internals, brine-handling piping, pulp-and-paper bleach stages, hydrometallurgical vessels.
Q4 What surface finish preserves Grade 12 corrosion resistance?
A clean, oxide-intact, contamination-free surface is the basis for Grade 12 corrosion resistance, identical to Grade 2. Iron, carbon-steel, or abrasive embedment can seed pitting and crevice attack. ASTM B600 alkaline cleaning + acid pickling is scheduled per the agreed inspection plan.
Q5 What is the minimum order quantity for a Grade 12 prototype?
A 1-piece minimum order quantity is supported. Indicative prototype lead time is 5–7 working days, subject to drawing completeness, material availability, and inspection scope.
