Engineering Compliance

Reducing-Acid Material Compliance Starts with the Correct Specification

For chemical processing in HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4, oxalic acid, hot brine, and similar reducing environments, the material specification — and in particular the palladium content — is the first control point. The manufacturing process must preserve drawing requirements, Pd content identity, dimensional conformity, and lot-level documentation.

Technical Capabilities

Three Critical Controls for Grade 7 Ti-0.2Pd Machining

01

Palladium Content Verification and Mill Traceability

Engineering Challenge

The corrosion benefit of Grade 7 is entirely dependent on the 0.12–0.25% Pd addition. A bar that drifts below the lower limit behaves like Grade 2 in the reducing-acid environment, with no corrosion advantage. The MTR must show Pd content measured by ICP-OES or XRF, and the mill must be on the buyer qualified-supplier list.

Our Machining Approach

We confirm the MTR Pd value against the customer specification at incoming inspection. We also flag any mill not on the buyer qualified-supplier list, since the chemistry controls across the industry are not uniform. Customer-supplied material is accepted only with a complete MTR; partial or absent chemistry data is treated as a deviation.

Engineering Outcome

Verified Pd content at the agreed acceptance range, with full chemistry traceability to the original heat.

02

Reducing-Acid Corrosion Performance Preservation

Engineering Challenge

Grade 7 corrosion performance in HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4, and similar reducing media is highly sensitive to surface condition. Iron contamination, embedded abrasive, or a damaged passive film can seed localized attack. In some reducing-acid services, even small surface defects grow rapidly.

Our Machining Approach

We segregate Grade 7 work from carbon-steel / 316L work where the order scope requires it, use dedicated tooling and workholding, and schedule ASTM B600 alkaline cleaning + acid pickling per the agreed inspection plan. Passivation schedules are matched to the customer downstream service environment.

Engineering Outcome

Surface free of iron and abrasive embedment, with the passive film intact at the point of shipment. Corrosion qualification remains the customer responsibility.

03

CP-Ti Fabrication Behavior (Forming, Welding, Machining)

Engineering Challenge

Despite the Pd addition, Grade 7 fabrication behavior is essentially identical to Grade 2: gummy-chip machining, iron-contamination sensitivity, weldability under standard procedures.

Our Machining Approach

We machine, form, and weld Grade 7 to the same procedures as Grade 2, with the additional step of Pd content verification at incoming inspection. Cutting parameters, weld-prep geometry, and surface-preparation schedule are matched to the Grade 2 baseline, not to alloyed grades.

Engineering Outcome

Cost-effective fabrication consistent with CP-Ti workflow, while preserving the corrosion benefit. Final tolerance and surface-finish commitment is confirmed after CAD, drawing, material condition, and inspection method review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grade 7 Ti-0.2Pd CNC Machining — Engineering FAQ

Q1 What is Grade 7 titanium and when is it used over Grade 2?
Grade 7 is Grade 2 with a small (0.12–0.25%) palladium addition. Mechanical properties are essentially identical to Grade 2 (same strength, ductility, weldability), but the palladium dramatically improves corrosion resistance in reducing-acid environments — dilute HCl, dilute H2SO4, H3PO4, oxalic acid, hot brine — where unalloyed Grade 2 can suffer general or pitting attack. The trade-off vs Grade 2 is a 3–10× material cost premium for the Pd-bearing stock.
Q2 Is Grade 7 weldable and formable like Grade 2?
Yes. The Pd addition is small enough that mechanical and fabrication behavior is essentially the same as Grade 2. The alloy can be cold-formed, hot-formed, machined, and welded using the same procedures as Grade 2, with the same gummy-chip considerations and the same iron-contamination control workflow.
Q3 How is the palladium content verified?
Palladium content is verified by the mill test report (MTR) per ASTM B348, with the typical analytical method being ICP-OES or XRF. The Pd lower limit is 0.12 wt% and the upper limit is 0.25 wt%; levels outside this band either fail to deliver the corrosion benefit (too low) or add cost without additional benefit (too high).
Q4 What surface finish preserves Grade 7 corrosion resistance?
The same contamination-controlled workflow used for Grade 2: dedicated tooling, ASTM B600 alkaline cleaning + acid pickling, and passivation scheduled per the agreed inspection plan.
Q5 What is the minimum order quantity for a Grade 7 prototype?
A 1-piece minimum order quantity is supported. Indicative prototype lead time is 5–7 working days, subject to drawing completeness, material availability, and inspection scope.
